COVID-19: HPA confirms six new cases in capital city Malé

Health Protection Authority (HPA) on Wednesday revealed that six more individuals tested positive for COVID-19 in the capital city of Male', raising the total number of confirmed cases in Maldives to 256.

According to the agency, cases MAV0251 to MAV0256 consist of one Pakistani national, and five local Maldivians.

With this new development, over a hundred local Maldivians are now confirmed positive for the virus, with 104 cases.

As per protocol, the six individuals will be moved to an isolation facility for treatment.

Maldives’ capital Malé, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, has recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 since it recorded its first local transmission of the virus on April 15, involving a Maldivian woman that sought assistance from a flu clinic in Malé after developing symptoms.

On Sunday, the country confirmed 73 new cases—the highest number of positive confirmations reported within a single day.

Presently, Maldives records 256 confirmed, 239 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 17 recoveries.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 3.15 million people and claimed over 218,400 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 964, 500 people have recovered.
