COVID-19: HPA confirms 13 new local transmissions in capital city Malé

Health Protection Authority (HPA) confirmed early evening on Wednesday that 13 Maldivians tested positive for COVID-19 in the capital city of Male', raising the daily recorded cases to 19.

According to the agency, cases MAV0257 to MAV0269 consist of 13 locals, of which 12 were linked to ‘RSC’ cluster, while one did not belong to any known clusters. Currently 42 confirmed cases belong to the RSC cluster.

As per protocol, the 13 individuals will be placed in an isolation facility for treatment.

Earlier on Wednesday, Maldives recorded six new COVID-19 cases involving five Maldivians and a Pakistani national in the capital city of Male’.

Malé, one of the most densely populated cities in the world, has recorded a significant increase in COVID-19 since recording its first local transmission on April 15. A Maldivian woman who sought assistance from a flu clinic in Malé after developing symptoms tested positive for the virus.

On Sunday, the country confirmed 73 new cases—the highest number of positive confirmations reported within a single day.

Presently, Maldives records 269 confirmed, 252 active cases of COVID-19, with a total of 17 recoveries. 117 Maldivians are now confirmed positive for the virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. The new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 3 million people and claimed over 211,900 lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 925, 800 people have recovered.
