The youth in critical condition after being stabbed in a gang fight near Islamic University last Sunday night is recovering, reported ADK Hospital on Tuesday.

The hospital’s managing director Ahmed Afaal said that the 18 year old male had been critical after severe injuries to the head, but he has been transferred to the Intensive Care Unit after his operation.

He had been unconscious on arrival at ADK Hospital, but Afaal disclosed that he has since regained consciousness and is no longer critical.

Police had taken 20 people into custody over the incident, but released them after taking their statements for investigation.

This incident happened at a time when Police has commenced a major operation over gang violence resurgence in the Maldives. A group of people had attacked two men on motorbikes with hammers and sharp weapons last week as well, leading to the arrest and subsequent release of around 50 suspects.

Despite the resurgence of such incidents in Male lately, Police stated Monday that it is currently too early to declare whether gangs are behind it.
