Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was transferred home late Wednesday after he was fitted with an electronic tag for monitoring.

The former vice president, who was detained in Maafushi Prison, was recently treated at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).

Local media Mihaaru reported that Adeeb was taken to the hospital after he hit his head against the bathroom wall resulting in a swelling on his forehead, while at the prison.

Apart from confiming Adeeb's transfer to home, Maldives Correctional Services did not provide any further information.

Police can moniter his whereabouts via the tag.

The former Tourism Minister recently attempted to flee to India while he was under a travel ban. Indian authorities intercepted him near the coast of Tuticorin Port, Thoothukudi while he was posing as a crew member aboard the tugboat 'Virgo 9'.

Following his apprehension, Adeeb requested protection from the Indian government, citing fears of politically motivated charges and past instances of being coerced to issue false statements.

Indian authorities rejected the request for Adeeb's asylum and handed him over to Maldives Police Service.
