National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) provided 10 tenants with temporary housing, on Wednesday, when a fire rendered a three storey house inhospitable in capital city Male'.
Per the authority, five women, four men and a young boy were amongst those displaced in the fire. The individuals will stay at a local guesthouse, all meals provided, until Sunday
Seven people received treatment from Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation. Reportedly, none are in serious condition.
NDMA's Chief Executive Hisan Hassan revealed that an assessment of the damages will commence Wednesday and that further action will be taken once damages are calculated.
"Stay and food has been arranged until coming Sunday. The next step will be determined after assessments", said Hisan.
Maldives National Defence Force stated that the incident was reported around 0345 hrs and was controlled nearing 0430 hrs.
The fire started when a timber stairway on the second storey caught fire, causing damages to both the third and second storey, while the first storey sustained heavy water damages.
