Around 40 Indian labourers who came to the Maldives to work in a construction company have appealed to the Government of India to assist them and help them return to their country citing severe hardships faced.

As reported in some Indian media, the labourers published a video appeal to their government on social media.

The labourers originate from various areas in India's Odisha State.

Times of India said that the labourers had come to Maldives to work in construction around June or July this year. Since they came, they are said to have been paid there salaries only in one month. When they attempted to demonstrate against their company for non-payment of salaries, the company disconnected electricity services in their accommodation block, they said.

Families of some of these labourers have confirmed this account to Times of India. The labourers had come to Maldives sponsored by a private company.

Reports state that families of these labourers are now preparing to submit an appeal on this case officially to the government.

It is so far unclear where in Maldives these labourers are stationed, or which company is employing them. The government of Maldives also has not commented on the matter as of yet.

There has been earlier cases as well where private companies bring in foreign labourers and fail to pay salaries regularly.
