Parliament approves salaries and Ramadan allowance for WDCs

Parliament has today approved the government's proposal to pay official salaries and Ramadan allowance to Women's Development Committees (WDCs) instead of the allowance they were earlier granted.

Parliament has today approved the government's proposal to pay official salaries and Ramadan allowance to Women's Development Committees (WDCs) instead of the allowance they were earlier granted.

This amendment to the Decentralization Act was proposed by ruling People's National Congress (PNC) MP Ahmed Zameer.

The amendment was passed without any changes through the unanimous votes of all 72 MPs who voted.

The amendment calls for WDC members to be included in the National Pay Commission under the advice of the Local Government Authority. With this, the amendment also states that they will be entitled to the Ramadan allowance.

The law stipulates that each employee must receive MVR 3000 as Ramadan allowance.

The bill further call to make the process easier for WDCs to get funding for their activities from the grants given to councils by the government.

WDC Presidents of city councils will be entitled to MVR 7000 in salary and allowances, while the Vice President will receive MVR 6,500. Members are to receive MVR 6000.

In island councils, WDC Presidents will receive MVR 6000, Vice Presidents MVR 5,500 and members MVR 5000.
