The Elections Commission (EC) has decided to hold the by-election for the vacated Male' Mayoral position on January 13, 2024.

EC Vice President Ismail Habeeb said on a programme on state media PSM last night that interested candidates can submit their applications from Sunday, November 27 until December 13.

In addition to the mayoral seat, the by-elections for other spots including three other vacated seats at the Male' City Council will also be held on the same day.

"On January 13, we'll be conducting by-elections for the post of Male' City Mayor, three other seats at the Maly' City Council, a seat at the Vaavu Atoll Rakeedhoo Council, as well as for the election of WDC members for 18 islands," Habeeb explained.

The Male' Mayoral seat was vacated when former mayor Dr Mohamed Muizzu resigned from his post and took oath of office as current President of the Maldives after winning the second round of September's presidential election.

The other three seats that are vacant at the Male' City Council are those left by former members who have now been appointed to various senior positions in President Dr Muizzu's administration.

Several candidates have already publicly announced their intentions to run for the Male' mayoral seat. This includes current councilor Mohamed Saif Fathih, former Attorney General Aishath Azima Shakoor, former Sports Minister Ahmed Mahloof and former Commissioner of Police Hussain Waheed.
