The Local Government Ministry has begun evaluations of the proposals submitted by various local councils to get uninhabited islands.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) today, Local Government Minister Adam Shareef said that it is a pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to financially empower local councils and direct financial benefits to the public. As such, a special committee dedicated to the matter is now evaluating the proposals sent in by various local councils, he said.

He also detailed that the evaluations would be completed within this week.

Only three councils submitted proposals for the uninhabited islands. They are Raa atoll Inguraidhoo Council, Dhaalu atoll Kuda Huvadhoo Council and Laamu atoll Maavashu Council.

Kuda Huvadhoo's request was to get the Minimasgaliaa island, while Inguraidhoo Council wanted Neyo island. Meanwhile, Maavashu Council requested for Bodumaabulhali island.

According to the Decentralisation Act, council are entitled to the uninhabited islands which lie within their jurisdiction. However, these islands will be given in addition to that.
