Vaping was banned in Maldives at the behest of the people, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said today.
With an amendment to the Tobacco Control Act, the sale and trade of vape products have been banned in the country, effective today.
President Muizzu, who is currently on a tour of the islands in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll, made the remarks during a meeting with the people of Mahibadhoo. He said that harmful trends seen globally had also spread within Maldivian communities.
The President said that while the sale of vape products was previously a legally permitted business, those involved in the trade were not at fault.
He added that the ban was in response to public demand to protect the health of future generations.
"I know they were legally allowed to sell [vape] before. They are not at fault. However, this country has suffered a lot. It is not the fault of those who traded it, but the people kept reiterating the need to save the youth from this," he said.
"So we decided to put a stop to it."
President Muizzu also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve the social situation in the Maldives and protect the youth from drugs. He acknowledged the prevalent issue of drug abuse in the country, stating that with determined action, it could be overcome.
He said that although there are existing anti-drug laws, loopholes in the legal framework had allowed the problem to persist.
