Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan has said that the current laws are designed to too broadly protect the rights of criminals, posing challenges to law enforcement in combatting crimes and bringing perpetrators to justice.
The Minister visited the Hiyaa Flats area last night to observe the police operation to detain 12 people involved in a kidnapping, and to rescue the victim. There, he spoke to media and said that the laws in Maldives had been framed in a manner to provide protection to those accused of crimes.
"All laws that would result in protecting criminals have been made. However, it does not appear that there was an intention to assist those combatting crimes, trying to prevent people from going into lives of crimes, and preventing crime," the Minister said.
He asserted that this government would bring necessary amendments to the laws to change this.
Ihusan stated that Police, even at present, has sufficient resources to assist them in facing criminals and apprehending them, and in fighting crime. However, the existing laws serve as an obstruction towards doing so.
"Because of how the laws are framed, many repeat offenders end up going free. A solution for this will be found when the laws are amended as necessary," he said.
The Minister emphasized that it is important to keep checks and balances in the law that would prevent an innocent person from being convicted of a crime. However, in Maldives, this right is currently too widely applied in the laws, he said.
Gang crimes and drug offences had exacerbated in the country beyond control by the time this administration had come to office, Ihusand said. As a result, it is a pledge of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu to combat this and bring down such crimes within this five year term.
For this reason, a dedicated unit has been formed within the Police to tackle gang related crimes.
Minister Ihusan asserted that Police will take serious action against offenders. assuring that the safety and protection of citizens is key for this administration.
