Member of the ruling governing coalition, Jumhooree Party, appointed former lawmaker Ali Arif as the Secretary General on Wednesday.
Arif was formerly the spokesperson of the current opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM). He left PPM on August 2018, and received his letter of appointment from JP leader and Maamigili MP Qasim Ibrahim.
The position was formerly held by former State Minister for Health Dr Hussain Rasheed. He served as Secretary General for approximately six months.
In Jumhooree Party's attempt to increase its member count and strengthen party operations, it has welcomed various PPM activists and former parliament members into the party. Former MP and Maldives Thirdway Democrats (MTD)'s former Vice President Abdulla Yamin Rasheed, Broadcasting Commission's former Vice President Ismail Sofwan, former MP and PPM parliamentary group leader Ahmed Nihan and a number of other prominent political figures have joined JP.
