Statistics reveal that 19 percent of the Maldivian youth population are NEETs

Recent statistics in review of the census completed in 2022 reveals that 19 percent of the youth are not employed, not undertaking any training nor education from the total youth populace of 53,537.

Recent statistics reveal that 19 percent of the Maldivian youth population are neither in employment, education nor training.

Statistics released by the Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) on Thursday on the occasion of World Population Day revealed that 1 in 5 youths who are between the ages of 15 and 24 are Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEETs). This number currently stands at 10,414.

These statistics gathered from the census conducted in 2022 further reveals that Maldives has a total population of 515,132. Of this, 382,639 are Maldivians while 132,493 are foreigners.

The census revealed that the total youth population in the Maldives is 53,537, comprising 27,625 males and 25,912 females. The Greater Male' Region accommodates 26,006 of the youth, while the remaining 27,531 are spread across the atolls.

In light of the education and labor force statistics of the youth population, the Bureau revealed that the majority of Maldivian youth are employed without being engaged in any form of education. This group comprises 34.2 percent of those aged between 15 and 24 years. Meanwhile, those pursuing education while being outside the labor force make up 34 percent of the youth population.

Statistics also reveal that 14.5 percent of the youth population are neither in the labor force nor in education, while 11.1 percent are both employed and engaged in studies. Additionally, 5 percent are unemployed and not studying, and 1.2 percent are unemployed but engaged in studies.

"In light of the population census completed two years ago, MBS revealed that the total employed population in the Maldives is 300,422. Of this, 174,036 are residents of the atolls, while the rest live in the Male' region. Foreigners comprise 129,292 of the total employed population, while Maldivians in employment make up 171,130.
