Ministry of Education has decided to offer a monthly allowance of MVR 1,500 for students who start their Advance Level (A'Level) education with the intention of pursuing a career in teaching.

With the decline in the number of teachers entering the education sector, the government has announced that it plans to start a special project to increase the number of teachers in the country.

Speaking with 'Mihaaru News' today, Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu said that they have decided to give a monthly allowance of MVR 1,500 for A'Level students who start studies this September, and intend to pursue a career in teaching.

He also said that the national programme to create more teachers in the country will be inaugurated during the last week of this month, adding that the number of additional teachers needed has now been identified.

"The teachers who come out of the programme will be skilled in shaping the country and its vision as well as in teaching children the love, care and beautiful qualities and lessons they need. It is a huge component of the education policy," the minister said in an earlier interview.

Back in 2022, the former administration increased the salaries of teachers and principals citing low pay as the reason for few locals entering the field. However, universities and colleges report that the number of students pursuing a career in the field has still not picked up.
