'Ley App', a mobile application which helps to connect blood donors with recipients who are in need of blood has been launched in the Maldives.

The app, which is developed by HRDNC and endorsed by the Ministry of Health, was officially launched by Minister of Health Dr Abdullah Khaleel.

With this, users are now able to register themselves as donors on www.ley.mv. Once registered, the app would send reminders to schedule appointments and go donate blood, which would increase the participation of donors, the Ministry said.

However, the app's services will officially commence on 1 August, 2024 when it is available to be installed via both the App Store and Play Stores.

Ministry of Health, on the occasion, said that this application is a big development in blood donation and strengthening other services related to blood.

It would allow to monitor blood availability and how it is managed, and would make it easier for health care facilities to ensure that the blood supply is of the optimum quality, the ministry said.

The app would also help securely deliver requests to donors in emergency situations where blood is needed urgently. When blood stock falls to critical levels, the Health Ministry, in collaboration with Maldivian Blood Services, would send an alert to all donors via the app.

HRDNC LLP says that the app was developed in consultation with health care experts and that it is a tool which would be very beneficial to the service since it would help facilitate an uninterrupted supply of life-saving blood in different parts of the country.

In the ceremony held by the Health Ministry on Thursday, a plaque of appreciation was presented to some blood donors.

According to records, a total of 507 individuals have voluntarily donated blood last year. However voluntary blood donations this year currently stands at 247.
