Family of the youth injured in Thursday night's accident involving a motorcycle and a Police car have refuted some of the claims made by police following the incident.
The Police statement issued after the accident stated that the accident in Hulhumale' Phase 2 had occurred around 01:50 hrs on Thursday night when the speeding motorcycle driving on Nirolhu Magu from north to south had collided with a Police car passing Nirolhu Magu from east to west on Gul'alaa Magu.
Citing eye witnesses, the family said that the Police car had not been pointing in the right direction for it to have been crossing across Nirolhu Magu on Gul'alaa Magu. Hence, they maintain that there is police negligence as well in this accident.
The Police have previously stated that the investigation will look into whether there was any negligence on the part of the driver of the Police car as well.
Police also said in their statement that the victim had had his license seized on last Saturday for contravening the Land Transport Act.
The accident left the motorist with severe injuries, with him still in hospital. The victim has been identified as a 19 year old working at Maldives Customs Service and pursuing further studies in IT.
The victim's brother told Mihaaru News that a motorcycle the youth had been driving the previous Saturday had been stopped by police, and the owner of the vehicle had been fined for having had illegal modifications made to the vehicle. However, he claims that there had been no mention made of the youth's license being seized.
He said that the family would appeal to Police to show them documents proving the license had been held, expressing disbelief that the youth would have been driving his motorcycle if his license had been seized.
"I am certain that if the license had been seized, then he would not have been driving a motorcycle. He is not like that, he is a quiet, reserved child," the brother said.
The brother further said that the youth is yet to regain consciousness, with his condition remaining unchanged as of yet. He is still on ventilator support in the Intensive Care Unit.
The family went on to say that the youth had had major surgery early in his life as well, following a severe head injury while playing in school.
"t was a major surgery which took 9 hours. We did not think we would get him back then, but through Allah's grace he came back to us, and then now this has happened. God willing, we hope to get him back this time as well," the brother said.
