Ministry of Health, on Saturday, handed over ambulances to 25 islands during a ceremony held at Republic Square in the capital city of Male'.
The handover was part of the project to establish a National Ambulance Service after providing ambulances to every inhabited island in the country.
Some of the ambulances were given over to islands that did not previously have any ambulance services.
According to the Health Ministry, these ambulances will aid in the management of emergency situations and disasters.
The 21 paramedic ambulances distributed to the islands were gifted to Maldives by Japan, as part of the JPY 300 million (USD 2.8 million) grant committed for the Maldivian health sector.
Ambassador of Japan to Maldives Keiko Yanai handed over the ambulances with a value of USD 1.4 million to Health Minister Abdulla Ameen at a ceremony held in Republic Square on the same day.
