President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has decided to remove more than 200 political employees from ministries to cut state expenditures.

In a post on social media platform X, President Muizzu said that as part of the Economic Reform Agenda, he has instructed to remove 228 political appointees from various ministries within the next 15 days.

"This includes seven State Ministers, 43 Deputy Ministers, 109 Senior Political Directors and 69 Political Directors," the post read.

With this decision, MVR 5.714 million will be saved from the government budget every month, President Muizzu added.

While its going to be one year since the current government came to power on November 17, information regarding how many political appointments were made by the current administration are yet to be disclosed.

At a press conference held during the change of government, the then Presidential Spokesperson Mohamed Firuzul said the number of political employees in the government would not exceed 700.

"This figure includes employees working in government ministries, the President's Office, the President's Residence and the Vice-President's Residence," Firuzul said.
