Two individuals have been arrested for attempting to attack a prison officer who works at the Hulhumale' Prison.
In the attack that occurred on June 11, the assailants tried to hit him on the head with a hammer as he was riding his motorcycle.
The two arrested are Ahmed Iyaz, 24 years, of Mirihimaage in Raa atoll Inguraidhoo, and Ahmed Rabeeu, 26 years, of Guleynooranmaage in Gaafu Alif atoll Maamendhoo.
Police said that Police CCTV camera footage from the area shows two persons wearing helmets waiting near the Hulhumale' Prison area, presumably tracking the movements of staff exiting the prison.
They said that the investigations have confirmed that it was these two persons who had attempted to attack the prison officer.
Iyaz was arrested while he was in hiding in Haa Alif atoll Baarah on June 14, and Rabeeu was arrested while trying to hide in a guesthouse in Male'. Both were arrested under court orders.
Police said that the court had ruled to hold both suspects in remand in custody until the investigation in completed.
Although the prison officer was not injured in the attack, police are investigating this as a serious crime.
