President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declared Tuesday that Maldives will mark October 22 as National Youth Day from 2020 onwards.
He made this decision following extensive deliberations with the Cabinet.
According to the President's Office, the Cabinet ministers vouched for October 22 as it was on that day Maldives passed the Act enabling voting rights for Maldivian citizens of 18 years, twelve years ago. Hence, the ministers noted that the date was of significant youth empowerment.
In the past, Maldives celebrated National Youth Day on various dates, including March 1, August 12 and November 7.
Following the president's official declaration, the government announced that National Youth Day 2020 will be celebrated with vibrant festivities.
