FIFA has handed over the management of the Football Association of Maldives (FAM) to Secretary General of the association Mohammed Jaushan Sharif (Jau), on the condition that only administrative tasks be carried out.

This directive follows the end of FAM's last elected Executive Committee (EXCO)'s term on Tuesday, before a management could be elected due to FIFA having to intervene upon discovering issues within the association.

With the election delayed, FAM notified FIFA of the impending term end, but received no clear instructions at the time.

However, FIFA communicated with Jaushan yesterday, after the EXCO's term ended.

"FIFA informed that [the association] has gone into FA administration. [A]nd ordered that only administrative communications be conducted under the supervision of the General Secretary. [They] said this would be notified in writing," Jaushan explained.

While it was believed earlier that FAM was heading towards a FIFA normalisation, local clubs previously requested FIFA to enter bring the association's management to a Normalisation Committee.

The last competition held by FAM before the most previous EXCO's term ended was the most recent under 19 Youth Championship.

However, the with the current situation of the association, FAM would no longer be able to organise another competition.

"After communicating with FIFA, I cannot do anything [related to FAM] except what is instructed by FIFA," Jaushan said.

Jaushan was appointed as the acting Secretary General of FAM last November after the former Secretary General Hussain Javaz resigned.

By the time FAM EXCO's term came to an end, the association was riddled with scandals involving money laundering and fraud which are being investigated by both FIFA and Maldives Police Service. In light of the investigations, FIFA has imposed a nine month suspension of the association's former President Bassam Adeel Jaleel, who is also charged and standing trial for fraud and misappropriation of funds in Maldives.

With Bassam suspended on 20th of June, FAM was lead by senior vice president of the association Ali Umar. However, with the EXCO's term having ended yesterday, Umar's term has also ended.
