These mosques will be constructed in the islands of Haa Alifu Baarah, Alifu Alifu Rasdhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Fenfushi, Faafu Feeali, Thaa Veymandoo, and Gaafu Dhaalu Madaveli, the Ministry said.
The government plans to build mosques in six islands this year, focusing on designs that reflect the Maldives' history, culture, and environment, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed said.
These mosques will be constructed in the islands of Haa Alifu Baarah, Alifu Alifu Rasdhoo, Alifu Dhaalu Fenfushi, Faafu Feeali, Thaa Veymandoo, and Gaafu Dhaalu Madaveli, the Ministry said.
The design of the mosques, created by Ryan Pvt Ltd, will incorporate features that are environmentally appropriate for the Maldives. Work on the mosques will begin after Ramadan and is expected to be completed by the end of the year, Minister Shaheem said.
The mosques will be equipped with modern amenities such as solar panels, air conditioners, and navilon, the Ministry added.
Each mosque will include classrooms for Qur'an education as well.
The capacity of the new mosques will range from 300, 500 or 700 people.
Minister Shaheem also highlighted that the cost of building a mosque with a capacity for 300 people would be approximately MVR 6 million. He suggested that if a private association or wealthy individuals are interested in funding the construction, the ministry would provide full cooperation and assistance.
Currently, there are 35 mosque construction projects underway. In addition,12 mosques are being funded by private donations.
The minister noted that 42 islands require mosques.
