Maldives suffered a tough start in the third round of the Asian Cup qualifiers, losing 4-1 to the Philippines.

The Philippines took an early lead, scoring twice in the first 20 minutes. Jefferson Tabinas opened the scoring in the 6th minute, followed by Bjørn Martin Kristensen’s goal in the 19th minute.

In the second half, Maldives improved after Naiz Hassan (Dhaadhu) replaced Mohamed Naeem. Ali Fasir (Sentey) converted a cross from Hussain Sifau (Crow) in the 62nd minute.

However, the Philippines responded with two more goals. Randy Schneider in the 77th minute and Sandro Reyes in extra time, securing a win.

Maldives is in Group A with the Philippines, Tajikistan, and Timor-Leste.

Tajikistan defeated Timor-Leste 1-0 in their opening match today.

Maldives' next game will be against Timor-Leste in June, followed by an away match against Tajikistan in October. Maldives will later face Tajikistan at home, host the Philippines at Galolhu Stadium in November, and conclude their qualifiers against Timor-Leste in March next year.
