Expatriate heading illegal retail businesses apprehended

Under the joint operation by Maldives Police Service and Maldives Immigration, an expatriate working as a leading figure in illegally running several retail outfits in capital Male' City has been apprehended last night.

Under the joint operation by Maldives Police Service and Maldives Immigration, an expatriate working as a leading figure in illegally running several retail outfits in capital Male' City has been apprehended last night.

In a post made by Immigration on X today, they said that a special operation had been conducted last night between 23:30 hrs and 00:30 hrs where they placed in detention an individual known to Immigration's Intelligence as someone illegally running a number of retail outlets in Male'.

"Along with this foreigner, three other foreign men and a women working at the site against regulations were also taken into custody," Immigration said.

Controller of Immigration Mohamed Sham'aan has also earlier said that the law grants him the authority to fine locals engaged in making expatriates work against the laws and regulations, and added that other strict action can also be taken against them.

Immigration and Police have been running joint operations over the past week to identify and detain expatriates working illegally in the country.

With those detained last night, 64 expatriates are currently in the custody of Immigration.
