Several officials from the Thalassemia Center have been removed from their positions and reassigned following public criticism over negligence.

The decision comes after thalassemia patients and their families staged a protest near Maldives Blood Services (MBS) on Saturday night, expressing frustration over unresolved issues.

Mihaaru News reports that Thalassemia Center Director Ahusan Hussain and Blood Bank Public Health Coordinator Faisal Ibrahim were transferred on Monday.

Faisal has been moved to Dhamanaveshi, while Ahusan has been reassigned to the Regional and Atoll Health Service Department.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu visited the Thalassemia Center the morning after the protest to hear concerns firsthand. He assured the public that steps would be taken to resolve the issues in collaboration with relevant authorities.

One of the key issues identified was the lack of a Director General at the Thalassemia Center since 2017. In response, the government appointed Ahmed Maumoon, an experienced professional in management and operations, as the new Director General on Monday.

The government also announced plans to recruit more nurses and appoint a Deputy Director General and a Director for the center.

President Muizzu also visited the new Thalassemia Center at "Orange Hiyaa" in Hulhumale' on Sunday to assess its readiness for relocation.

A major concern raised by the protesters was the wastage of blood transfusion filters. The government has assured that this issue will be addressed as soon as possible.

President Muizzu said that he had held a meeting on Sunday to find immediate solutions for the Thalassemia Center and had given detailed instructions on how to proceed.

"God willing, we will try to resolve all the difficulties faced by Thalassemia patients in the coming days under my direct supervision. I assure you that everything will be resolved in the coming days," he said.
