People take part in a demonstration part of a nationwide day of actions called by high-school students, joined by unions and teachers, who for days have been demanding better learning conditions in protests punctuated by violent confrontations in Bayonne, southwestern France, on October 6, 2026. Students have blocked the entrances to hundreds of high schools for 15- to 17-year-olds since late September, complaining of missing teachers, overloaded timetables, dilapidated classrooms and buildings that cannot cope with rising temperatures.

Coordinators of the Yellow Vests movement are calling on the French public to take part in protests on October 31.

"October 31st. Act III," the Yellow Vests said in a statement published on the website dedicated to the demonstrations that took place on October 17.

The event is planned as a sit-in protest, scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. (13:00 GMT), the statement read. The organizers have called on people to gather in Paris near the building of the French parliament's lower house, as well as outside town halls in other locations across the country.

The protests in France began in mid-September, when high school students in the Paris suburbs took to the streets to demand improvements to their schools. They were later joined by people frustrated by rising prices, and the movement spread to other regions.

The largest demonstration to date took place on October 17. According to the French Interior Ministry, approximately 550,000 people participated. French law enforcement used tear gas, stun grenades, and water cannons against the protesters.
