A protest demonstration organized by the student group Interfac IDF has begun in Paris, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported on Thursday.
On Wednesday, the Paris police prefecture had banned the Interfac IDF demonstration scheduled for Thursday. However, the Paris Administrative Court subsequently suspended that ban.
The march began in the 13th arrondissement of Paris, near the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital, with hundreds of people in attendance.
Many young people are among the protesters, carrying signs that condemn police actions and the current state of wages in France. One sign read, "High school students, injured [during protests], are being treated by underpaid doctors in dilapidated hospitals," while another stated, "High school students are aiming for their final exams, the police are aiming for the head."
Dozens of police officers in full riot gear have lined up in front of the demonstrators, some holding anti-riot shields.
Protests began in France in mid-September, when high school students in the Paris suburbs took to the streets to demand improvements to their schools. They were later joined by people unhappy with rising prices, and the demonstrations spread to other regions.
The largest event was a nationwide demonstration on October 17, which, according to the Interior Ministry, drew approximately 550,000 participants. French law enforcement used tear gas, stun grenades, and water cannons against the protesters.
