Leader of the French Patriots party Florian Philippot on Sunday called for the resignation of French President Emmanuel Macron following mass unrest and clashes at protests on October 17.

Philippot, who is also a presidential candidate, accused the French authorities of facilitating large-scale illegal migration into France for decades.

"To get out of the chaos, we need to drive out the traitors in power (Macron must resign)..., we need to restore statehood, restore national sovereignty," Philippot wrote on X.

On Saturday, large-scale protests against the rising cost of living and price increases took place across France. They were accompanied by fierce clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement, unrest and vandalism. Police used tear gas, stun grenades, and water cannons against the crowd.

French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said there were 1,200 detentions across the country. On Sunday, Paris Police Chief Patrice Faure said more than 850 people were detained in Paris.
