The number of people detained during unrest in France has reached 1,200, and 150 police and gendarmerie officers have been injured in clashes with protesters, Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu said.
"The figures are being updated, and as I speak to you, the total number of those detained has reached 1,200," Lecornu told reporters.
The official added that 150 law enforcement officers had been injured during the unrest.
On Saturday, large-scale protests took place across France against the rising cost of living and price hikes. The demonstrations were marked by violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement, as well as rioting, looting, and acts of vandalism. The police used tear gas, stun grenades, and water cannons against the crowds.
During the unrest, some protesters broke into the town halls of Limoges, Marseille, and Lille. In Limoges, a fire was set on the ground floor of the town hall, which subsequently spread to the roof. In Lyon, a tourist office was looted and set on fire.
In total, 550,000 people took part in the demonstrations across France, including 110,000 in Paris.
