US President Donald Trump on Friday voiced his belief that Saudi Arabia will end up accepting an offer by Israel to join the fight against Yemen's Ansar Allah movement, also know as the Houthis.
Israel's Haaretz newspaper reported on Tuesday that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attempted, through the United States, to offer Saudi Arabia assistance in its operation against the Houthis, but was met with a refusal by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
"Yeah, I do," Trump told reporters when asked whether he thinks Riyadh should accept the assistance offer. "I think they will."
The president said that Israel has been "very helpful" to the kingdom in its fight against the movement, noting that Saudi Arabia should accept the latest offer.
The situation in Yemen escalated in mid-July when Saudi-backed pro-government forces struck Sanaa's airport as a plane from Iran, carrying a delegation of Houthi leaders, was landing. The movement blamed Saudi Arabia for the attack and declared war on the kingdom until the blockade of Houthi-controlled territories is lifted.
Rebels have since taken control of the entire western coast of the Red Sea and cities near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, whereas the internationally recognized Yemeni government launched an operation to recapture the capital, Sanaa, from the Houthis.
