Countries have proposed to hold an extra biodiversity meeting in Nairobi in June as talks in Geneva tasked with saving nature entered their final day without an agreement.
Biologist Mario Moscatelli, who runs a program to replant mangrove forests at a former dump site shows rubbish that has entered a river that flows into Guanabara Bay, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Situated at the heart of Rio, Guanabara Bay is one of the most postcard-gorgeous spots on Earth, but urban sprawl has badly damaged it. Home to 12.5 million people, it has has long been a dumping ground for garbage, toxic chemicals and sewage, more than half of which goes untreated. Now, after decades of failed fixes, a new operator promises to invest billions to clean up the bay. --Photo: Carl De Souza | AFP
