The two events 'National Open Water Swimming' and the 'National Aquathlon Competition', jointly organized by the Swimming Association of the Maldives and Male Fitness Club in sponsorship with Maldives Gas, which were held at Kaafu Atoll's Dhiffushi this past weekend, set out with the objective of providing participants the opportunity to contest in a different atmosphere for the ultimate competitive and inclusive experience.
Dhiffushi saw the 13th Installment of the National Open Water Swimming conclude with over 90 participants from an array of age groups, having the largest turnout of participants the series has ever had; and with more than a hundred contestants, the first event of its kind in the Maldives to feature swimming and running, the National Aquathlon.
“Truth is, this is going to help us achieve a lot of great things such as expanding our local tourism. We are already putting in a lot of effort to further grow this industry and we believe this as the first step towards securing those goals. Hoping that many of these activities frequent this island,” said the President of Dhiffushi Island Council, Ibrahim Azeem, insisting that the island will be enriched especially through businesses.
Dhiffushi Island Council was a major supporting actor for the event. The island council cleaned up the island in anticipation of its guests, among other gestures in order to be good accommodating hosts.
New Lagoon Swimming Club and Maldives Lifeguard Association (MLA) have spoken about many great things regarding the way the competitions were held.
To have two major events held nearby capital Male’ made it accessible for many people, while having it on the weekend allowed the participants to have a holiday with their families as they competed, further instilling the competitive mindset in them.
MLA said the event was conducted In a manner that laid a solid foundation to establish opportunities for many young people to join in on the fun together and experience the competition, especially to grow and mold as a team.
New Lagoon said Maldives is capable of achieving greatness when it comes to watersports because of the country's geography, further stating that even though the best facilities are not available, they recognized the efforts by those who push the sports to greater heights.
National Open Water Swimming saw Aishath Saajina, a swimmer of Maldives' national swimming team, prove to be the women’s champion with Ali Iuman becoming the men’s champ.
Mohamed Aan Hussain and Aminath Iram Saleem won the junior championship. Aged 14 years, both these champions have secured their names in the history books.
With over 214 individuals jotting down their names for the two events, they and their families had most of the guesthouses in Dhiffushi fully booked with people booking rooms in local households as well. The council believes this to be a great push and a bump to the island's economy.
