Parliament has today approved two persons as the newest members of the Elections Commission.
The two who received approval are former Vice President of the Human Rights Commission Mohamed Zahid and former Secretary General of the Elections Commission Abdul Rahman Solah.
Both were approved unanimously by all MPs who participated in the vote.
Zahid was earlier dismissed from the HRCM through a non confidence vote taken against him by parliament.
Solah most recently saved as Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology. He resigned from the post early last year.
Two membership posts at the Elections Commission became vacant following parliament's removal of EC Vice President Ali Nashath and member Mohamed Asif. They were removed following some complaints reviewed by the Parliament's Committee on Independent Institutions.
With a total of three member positions at the EC currently vacant, the commission is currently not in operation. While the minimum quorum for commission meetings is more than half of its members, currently the commission only has two members in office.
