Police are bringing into effect several changes to better address rising traffic incidents in the Male' region. As such, police presence on the streets is to be increased so that people out and about will come across officers at least once every five minutes.

Maldives Police Service are bringing into effect several changes to better address rising traffic incidents in the Male' region. As such, police presence on the streets is to be increased so that people out and about will come across officers at least once every five minutes.

Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau told Mihaaru News that these actions are being taken in response to the recent high occurrence of dangerous road accidents in Male' and Hulhumale'. The aim is to increase road safety and ensure motorists abide by traffic regulations.

Shujau said that major changes have been brought to how Police officers are active on the streets. Once fully implemented, he said that the members of the public out on the streets will come across a Police Officer at least once every five minutes.

"We are starting these efforts in Male'. Someone coming out of their homes to go somewhere will see an Officer every five minutes. That is what we are working to achieve now," the Commissioner said.

To achieve this, the Commissioner said that officers now in trainings will also be assigned street patrol duty, with police monitoring the streets during a large part of the day.

At present, there are Police officers stationed in 21 locations in Male' at high traffic hours, he revealed.

Earlier, increased police presence was only during various special operations. The Commissioner said that this time, this would be a permanent arrangement.

To manage these efforts, a central command will be set us as well, which can monitor in real time police activities in both Male' and Hulhumale'.

The Commissioner also said that trained officers will be stationed in areas noted to be gang activity hubs.
