President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has decided to waive fines for long overdue electricity and water bills in residential homes.

In a post on X, he stated that this effort was part of the government's initiative to improve the financial condition of people.

President Muizzu added that fines for residences with electricity and water bills at domestic rates would be waived.

Relevant companies have been informed and asked to formulate agreements to pay the outstanding amounts in an easier manner, President Muizzu said.

The President had earlier decided that water and electricity bills would be capped to ensure that they do not exceed beyond the levels of normal months.

"The electricity and water bills will be capped at the same rate as they are during a normal month," the President said while speaking at Baa atoll Eydhafushi.

The President also said that State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has been instructed to cancel the MVR 30 charge levied by the company from islands where they provide their services.
