President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is a key partner who has contributed significantly towards the development of Maldives.

The President made these remarks while speaking at the 45th anniversary of UNDP in Maldives held last night.

The President highlighted that the partnership between Maldives and UNDP is based on shared values of progress, development and human dignity.

In his speech, he reflected on Maldives' rise from a Least Developed Country to a modern, resilient country.

"Since UNDP opened its country office in the Maldives in 1978, it has been a constant presence in our journey towards sustainable development. UNDP’s expert support was vital in helping the Maldives graduate from Least Developed Country status in 2011," he said.

He expressed his administration's target to make Maldives a Fully Developed Nation by the year 2040.

"We rely on UNDP’s continued support to achieve these goals and are grateful for the assistance provided in developing the twenty-year development plan and the Government's Strategic Action Plan (SAP), both of which are currently underway," he said.

He extended appreciation for UNDP's broadening of its focus in the Maldives to now include projects on climate resilience, social inclusion, women's empowerment, good governance, economic diversification and institutional reform.
