The Election Commission (EC) has made the fifth election announcement for members of Women's Development Committee (WDC) in Vaavu atoll Thinadhoo and the third announcement for the election of a female member of the Rakeedhoo council in the same atoll.
According to the EC, the by-elections for a female member of Rakeedhoo council and the Women's Development Working Committee of Thinadhoo will be open until March 14. The election is scheduled for April 2023.
In April 2021, members were elected to the councils and WDC, including five members to the Women's Committee in Thinadhoo. However, they lost their positions when they objected to signing the appointment letter.
The commission's Vice President, Ismail Habeeb, said that the Local Government Authority (LGA) has announced they are seeking a member for the Thinadhoo Women's Committee. Habeeb went on to say that the previous four announcements were insufficient, and that no one had yet put their name forward for the committee. Therefore, the fifth announcement was made yesterday.
Habeeb noted the difficulty in finding members from Vaavu atoll, especially in Thinadhoo, due to the small population. Although people contest in by-elections in other islands, the number of voters in Thinadhoo is approximately 50.
