The government has repaired the water drainage pump station at Maafannu Cemetery, bringing a temporary solution after the pump had been damaged.

In a statement issued last night, the Construction Ministry said that they inspect pumps placed around Male' with every instance of rain and flooding.

With yesterday's rains resulting in Male' streets flooding, the Construction Ministry conducted these inspections. During this, they found the Maafannu Cemetery pump station to be damaged, with the connecting pipes also damaged beyond use.

The Ministry said that this had been caused due to the negligence of Male' City Council in digging up the area during their efforts to clear the cemetery.

The statement said that the council had undertaken that work without discussion or notice to the ministry.

The ministry said that the Maafannu pump station has now been made operational through checking the pump stations and network with the aid of STELCO and RDC.

Minister Abdulla Muththalib alleged that the damage had been caused deliberately. However, Male' Mayor Adam Azim claims that the pumps have been damaged for about five months now.

Muththalib refutes this, stating that the station had been used even during the flooding on January 3, and no issues had been found then.
