The case involves suspended Supreme Court judges Mahaz Ali Zahir and Dr Azmiralda Zahir, who are accused of attempting to influence a Criminal Court judge to release Azmiralda’s husband, Dr. Ismail Latheef, following his arrest.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has summoned individuals for questioning in connection with allegations of Supreme Court judges attempting to influence Criminal Court judges.
An ACC official confirmed to Mihaaru News that several individuals had been called in, including some Criminal Court judges, with some appearing last night to sign their statements.
The case involves suspended Supreme Court judges Mahaz Ali Zahir and Dr Azmiralda Zahir, who are accused of attempting to influence a Criminal Court judge to release Azmiralda’s husband, Dr. Ismail Latheef, following his arrest.
However, Dr Azmiralda’s lawyer, Ibrahim Shameel, has denied these allegations, stating that no judge was contacted or influenced and that the claims are entirely false.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) is also investigating another disciplinary case against Mahaz and Azmiralda. This case involves an incident in October 2022, where High Court Assistant Registrar Hussain Mohamed Haneef was allegedly summoned to the Supreme Court and subjected to demeaning language by then-Supreme Court judge Husnu Su’ood.
The JSC determined that Mahaz and Azmiralda bore equal responsibility for the incident and decided to proceed with an investigation.
Although JSC initially launched an inquiry into Su’ood’s conduct over the matter, his resignation means the case against him will not proceed under the previous procedure.
Judges Husnu Su’ood, Mahaz Ali Zahir, and Dr. Azmiralda Zahir were suspended last week, just 15 minutes before the Supreme Court was scheduled to hear a petition challenging a constitutional amendment that mandates MPs lose their seats if they defect or are expelled from their party.
The suspensions also coincide with the parliamentary passing an amendment to the Judicature Act, which reduces the number of Supreme Court judges from seven to five. The amendment has yet to be ratified by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
