Free education is once more an option thanks to the government's decision to increase the subsidy for A Level students at Villa International High School (VIHS).
The school has sought to increase the fee up to MVR 3,600 for the incoming grade 11 pupils starting this year, the principal of the school Saeed Ahmed said. He also stated that this week it was informed that the Ministry of Education has consented to adjust the subsidy as per the increase.
Saeed explained that students who pass five subjects will therefore be able to study for free.
While the ministry has agreed to pay a hefty fee for the students, Villa high school has decided to take a fee of MVR 3600 from new students starting grade 11 this year. As a result of the change, students who joined the new batch of A Level, which started on September 28, have paid their fees.
Saeed had stated that the fees paid by those students will be refunded. So far, the education ministry has been paying the fees of students who passed five O' Level subjects and want to study further at VIHS, which amounts to MVR 1,370 for each student.
Even those who got below five O' Level passes did get a spot in the school, but they had to pay a fee of MVR 2,400 on their own. However, starting from this year, the amount that they have to pay has gone up to MVR 3,600.
Saeed said the government will pay the fee only if the student has passed Islam or Dhivehi in addition to four other subjects. Students will have to study three more subjects at A level apart from Islam, Dhivehi and English.
Even though the government has decided to pay a hefty fee for new A Level student, those currently studying in grade 12 will continue to receive MVR 1,370 in government aid as they did previously.
Saeed claimed that since free education was reinstated in the high School, more students are expressing an interest in enrolling in the institution. He said, students will be given the opportunity to enroll in the institution according to available placements.
