The government launched sea ambulance services between Malé City and Vilimalé on Wednesday, January 3, 2024.

Minister of Health Dr. Abdulla Khaleel, CEO of Dharumavantha Hospital Ibrahim Abdul Razzaq Haleem, and Minister of Transport Mohamed Ameen attended the inaugural ceremony of the service.

Facilitating sea ambulance services between the capital city and neighboring Vilimalé, as well as improving health services in the island, are among the key pledges made by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

"As luck would have it, we have received bigger, better and more high-standard speedboats compared to the ones currently in operation," Minister Khaleel said.

At the inauguration ceremony, Minister Khaleel addressed the challenges faced by residents of Vilimalé in transporation to the capital city for medical emergencies.

"The efforts will not conclude here. In fact, we will bring about necessary changes to improve the service. Our aim is to provide better services to the people of Vilimalé day after day."

In December 2023, the government announced its plan to develop a 100-bed tertiary medical facility in Vilimale' to enhance the island's health infrastructure.
