Maldives Media Council (MMC) has said on Tuesday that Gender Ministry is not cooperating with MMC's assessment into how the Ministry took action against several media outlets over their coverage of the murder of a minor.
In a press release by MMC, the council had stated they had decided to conduct an assessment to investigate how media outlets had gone against the laws regarding publishing information around crimes and issues involving minors.
Over the coverage of the 13 year old found dead in the sea area in Hulhumale', which is accessible to the public , Avas news was fined 2,000 Rufiyaa. Vaguthu news, One Online, and Adhadhu were reminded on the correct procedure when it comes to reporting issues relating to minors.
The council had requested for information to clarify exactly why action was taken against the aforementioned media. They had requested information form both Gender Ministry and Child and Family Protection Service for this assessment on two different occasions.
MMC stated the Gender Ministry has not yet answered those questions nor replied to any letters they had sent their way either.
The lack of cooperation from the Ministry is leading to delays in completing this assessment, MMC said.
