Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who is seeking re-election, has pledged to introduce a rent-free council housing scheme for the impoverished and disadvantaged during his second term.

President Solih unveiled his "New Youths’ Generation" policy manifesto during a campaign event in Landhoo of Noonu Atoll on Monday, August 14. He is presently touring the islands of Noonu Atoll as part of his presidential campaign.

While speaking with Landhoo public, President Solih said that the council housing program is designed to assist the underprivileged and vulnerable members of society, emphasizing that residents of the council housing units will not be required to pay rent.

President Solih further announced Affordable Co-Living Space and Studio Space Housing schemes for the youth.

"Many students who temporarily relocate to Malé City for education are burdened by high rents. We aim to address this issue and facilitate easier access to education," Solih said. He also revealed plans to introduce a new housing loan with a six percent interest rate in the near future.

In addition to the social housing schemes, President Solih outlined his vision for increasing sports facilities and promoting mental health to empower the youth. He pledged to establishing sports complexes and nationwide mental health consultation centers to facilitate these goals.

President Solih also announced his plan to divide the ministry of youth, sports, and commmunity empowerment into two distinct ministries during his second term. He proposed creating the ministry of youth and the ministry of sports to enhance individual growth. He emphasized the need for a second term to fully implement this vision.

During his speech in Landhoo, the MDP candidate made several promises for the island if elected for a second term. He said that the island had previously been neglected, but significant changes had occurred during his presidency.

"Almost all the essential needs are almost fulfilled now," Solih said.

Pledges for Landhoo

- Housing development project

- Upgrading and development of the roads

- Futsal pitch development

- Modern waste management system

- Development of a children’s park and a fish market

- Increase health center’s operating period to 24 hours

President Solih reassured the residents that the island will not be neglected due to its low population and guaranteed ongoing developmental projects for the island. He expressed optimism about securing the majority of votes from Landhoo in the upcoming election on September 9.

"The future of Noonu atoll is promising and bright. I have witnessed the people's trust in our governance from this atoll," President Solih said.
