President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has said that Uthuru Thila Falhu (UTF) is among the locations where the government intends to allocate land plots as part of its newly announced project aimed at granting land to individuals who have resided in Malé for 20 years or more.

UTF is the site where the harbor and dockyard for the Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) are currently under construction.

Speaking at a campaign event held by the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) last night, the President said that Malé will be linked by land up to UTF under the new project and that he will ensure that Maldivians can own land from UTF.

The President said "One of the places where we have decided to do that [allocate land from] is Uthuru Thila Falhu. Maldivians will live there. Not foreigners."

The President elaborated that, "Malé to Hulhumalé, Gulhifalhu to Thilafushi, Thilafushi to Giraavaru Falhu, and Giraavaru Falhu to Uthuru Thila Falhu will be linked by a bridge."

The new project announced by president Solih will grant land plots to people who have lived in Malé for 20 years or more, and those who have been in the Malé registry for 20 years.

President Solih said that the opportunity to apply for the scheme became available from last night, and he encouraged everyone eligible to apply for it.

"We will ensure that people will own land without discrimination," said president Solih.

The agreement with India to develop a special harbor for the MNDF Coast Guard in UTF was signed in February 2021.

There has been heavy criticism against the government for not disclosing the terms of the agreement, and the opposition claims that Indian soldiers are present on the site.
