Sewage leaks in flood lead 40 to temporary shelters

With the heavy flooding in Male' in yesterday's continuous rains, sewage leaks have occurred leading to residents of four households having to be transferred to temporary shelters, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has said.

NDMA stated that they are working to provide assistance to those affected in the heavy rains and flooding in Male' and the atolls.

40 persons from four households have been transferred to temporary shelter due to sewage leaks resulting from the floods last night, NDMA said.

They said that they had received reports of heavy rain from K. Himmafushi, Huraa and Guraidhoo, as well as of flooding and sewage leaks in Thulusdhoo.

The MET Office has now issued a Yellow Alert from Baa atoll to Meemu atoll till 11am today. There is also a Yellow Alert from Haa Alif atoll to Baa atoll till 1.30pm.

The MET Office predicts heavy rains, thunderstorms and flooding in these areas.

Early this morning, MNDF said that dewatering efforts are being undertaken at six areas in capital Male' City. As of then, assistance had been provided to 85 residences, and 707 sandbags had been placed at various locations.
