Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusan has said that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has directed the introduction of digital ID cards ensuring that individuals will be notified whenever their information is accessed by any authority.

Speaking at a PSM forum on Friday, Minister Ihusan stated that the government aims to develop a digital identity system that meets international standards.

"Citizens will be able to see if any agency, private sector organization, or service provider accesses their data. Consent will be required before they can proceed, and individuals will also be able to track who accessed their personal information and for what reason," he said.

e-Faas system already provides digital access to ID cards, driver's licenses, and marriage certificates. However, digital ID cards are not yet accepted everywhere.

Meanwhile, the Homeland Ministry has faced allegations of using ID card information from the Department of National Registration (DNR) to add members to the ruling People's National Congress (PNC).

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has called for Minister Ihusan’s resignation, and a no-confidence motion against him has also been to the parliament.
