The Import Export Statistics published by Customs today show that last month, over MVR 1 billion worth of food products, not including pork, alcohol and tobacco, was imported into Maldives.
Statistics from Maldives Customs Service indicate that although the types of food products imported during March, coinciding with Ramadan, increased, the total amount of imports remain same as the previous month.
The Import Export Statistics published by Customs today show that last month, over MVR 1 billion worth of food products, not including pork, alcohol and tobacco, was imported into Maldives. This is an MVR 88 million increase compared to last month's figure of MVR 968 million.
The report shows that both in March and February, total imports including fuel was at MVR 4.4 billion.
However, the cost shows a slight decrease when fuel is excluded. In February, the amount was at MVR 3.6 billion, going down to MVR 3.5 billion in March.
As per Customs statistics, fuel imports in March were at MVR 867 million. This is an MVR 105 million increase from the previous month.
In both February and March, the third highest imports were of machinery and electronic equipment. Last month's figures of this were at MVR 729 million.
Similar to imports, exports were also at the same figure in February and March.
Last month, goods worth MVR 204 million were exported, most of which is fish products.
Although the total import and export figures are the same for both months, Customs revenue decreased in March compared to the previous month.
Customs received MVR 350 million in revenues last month, which is MVR 13 million lower than February.
Last month's statistics show that the highest amount of imports was from UAE. 16 percent of goods was imported from India, while 12 percent was from China. 8 percent of imported goods were from Singapore.
Meanwhile, 58 percent of exported goods were taken to Thailand. Second on the list is the UK, to which 21 percent goods were exported to.
