The low number of local teachers has been a persistent concern in the education sector. There is also the issue of low number of teachers, especially locals, as schools in the country increase.
Shafeeu said that teams from the Education Ministry had visited different regions to make efforts to increase the number of people working as teachers.
As a result, the number of individuals enrolled in teaching courses in private colleges and universities have significantly increased, he said.
"This year, a record number of students have enrolled for teaching courses. Over 640 students are starting the degree course afresh, in the teaching field alone.
Shafeeu said that the number of individuals enrolled in teaching this year is higher than that in the past ten years.
The President officially launched the program to increase local teachers today, as per his presidential pledge. He presented scholarships to 135 A'level students who aspired to work in teaching.
The Education Minister said that the government aims to train 150 teachers under this program each year.
Over 2000 teachers are currently needed across 20 atolls. The ministry has decided that monthly allowance of MVR 1500 will be provided to those studying teaching.
