Blood donation offers hope for the survival of individuals with thalassemia and should be an act of joy for everyone, said Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef at the launch of the Thalassemia Prevention and Control Master Plan for the next 10 years last night.

In his speech, Vice President Hussain said that children with thalassemia are a vital part of society and deserve equal opportunities, just like other children. He urged special attention to their healthcare, noting that one significant way the public can help is by donating blood.

"Blood donation should be a source of happiness for everyone. It is a lifeline for these children," the Vice President said.

He further highlighted the government's efforts in facilitating bone marrow transplants for children with thalassemia and its plans to extend this opportunity to more children in the future.

VP Hussain also praised President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's dedication to improving healthcare services for thalassemia patients, highlighting the signing of an agreement to establish a special hospital for them as pillar of this commitment.

"This project, driven by compassion, aims to alleviate the suffering of families. The government will continue to ensure the provision of necessary services in a sustainable manner," VP Hussain said.

The agreement for constructing a thalassemia hospital in Hulhumale' Phase 2 was signed during the ceremony.

Meadow Asia and Chin Hin Group Berhad were awarded the contract to build the hospital, with Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim signing on behalf of the Maldivian government. Stuart J. Venner Pack, CEO of Meadow Asia, and Roger Lin, CEO of Chin Hin Group, signed of helf of their respective companies. The financing of the project has been arranged by Sinoma Industry Engineering Company.

A video presentation revealed the hospital's layout, showing a three storey facility that will include an emergency room, canteen, children's playground on the ground floor and a laboratory, blood transfusion unit, radiology department, and a blood and organ transplant unit.

The construction of this hospital is a presidential pledge of President Muizzu.
