Third national junior surfing championship begins

The 2023 national junior surfing championship commenced yesterday with three age categories.

The third national junior surfing championship commenced at Malé Raalhugandu area yesterday.

The tournament features three age categories—under 18, under 16, and under 14—with heats across all divisions commencing yesterday.

Eight athletes are competing in the under 14 category this tournament. While two heats were carried out in the first round of the tournament, the first heat was won by Yaseen Ahmed Nashid, who scored 11 points. Ahmed Rafaan Rauoof, who scored 4.33 points came in second place.

In the second heat, Nooh Mohamed Dhuneim Irushad scored first place with 6.73 points. In that heat Ahmed Aal Adil scored 3.80 points and came in second.

Contestants who placed first and second from each heat have advanced to the quarter finals. However, Mohamed Ahil Ibrahim, Sharif Shaair, Shameen Sharumeel Naseer and Hussain Azaan Ismail, who did not make it to the top two of their respective heats, will compete in the second round.

In this tournament, most contestants are in the under 16 category, with four heats commenced yesterday. Yaseen came in first in the first heat with 10.50 points while Mohamed Inaan Abdul Hannaan scored 13 points and secured the second heat. However, it was Kayaan Abdulla Areef who scored the highest, winning the third heat with 13.66 points, while Yoosuf Kayaan Hamdhaan won the last heat with 8.23 points.

Ten surfers competed in the under 18 category where Ahmed Rajwan Ibrahim and Ahmed Aroon Mohamed competed for first place against Sayyid Salahuddeen, who won the heat with 11.50 points. Kayan Zaki, Aik Ali and Iraaf Ali also competed against each other. However, it was Kayaan Areef who won the heat with 12.83 points. In the third heat, Inaan and Viyaash Ahmed were left behind on the score board by Ahmed Luzein who won with 9.57 points.
